Hyderabad: Mild tension prevailed at Ayyappa Society in Madhapur on Monday when several residents living around Sunnam Cheruvu staged a protest against the HYDRAA and the State government.

The protestors alleged that HYDRAA officials were carrying out a survey to demolish their homes, despite a stay on such activities from the court.

Protest over alleged misrepresentation of land extent

The residents claimed that the original area of Sunnam Cheruvu was only around 15 acres, but officials were now showing it as 32 acres and were pressuring them to vacate their houses. Outraged by the move, the residents took to the main road, leading to significant traffic congestion in the area.

Tense moments as protestors threaten suicide

The situation escalated when some protestors carried petrol bottles and threatened to end their lives if justice was not delivered. Police personnel rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.

HYDRAA clarifies: Layout within the lake’s FTL

Meanwhile, HYDRAA clarified that the layout in question SIET layout, falls within the Full Tank Level (FTL) boundary of Sunnam Cheruvu, located between Guttala Begumpet and Allapur villages, on the border of Serilingampally and Kukatpally mandals.

Past approvals cancelled by HMDA, GHMC

HYDRAA said a similar draft layout previously approved by HMDA was cancelled for the same reason. Even permissions issued earlier by GHMC for individual constructions were revoked upon confirmation of lake encroachment.

Survey data validated by government departments

Sunnam Cheruvu spans 32.60 acres, as per the 1975 Survey of India records, a fact also reflected in village revenue records. A joint survey by the Irrigation, Revenue and GHMC departments conducted under High Court orders confirmed these details.

Illegal constructions will not be spared

HYDRAA emphasised that structures built on lake beds or drainage channels are illegal and cannot be tolerated. Courts have consistently directed the removal of such encroachments. The authority clarified that no buildings currently exist within the SIET layout; only vacant plots are present.

Compensation is possible for eligible plot owners

HYDRAA suggested that those believing they are entitled to compensation should apply to the government. It urged residents not to obstruct lake rejuvenation works.
