`Mangiferin’: University of Hyderabad scientists discover anti-cancer agent in mango leaves
The study demonstrates mangiferin's ability to prevent mucosal erosion and inflammatory cell infiltration
By Anoushka Caroline Williams Published on 4 May 2024 8:40 AM GMTHyderabad: Mangoes hailed as the `King of Fruits’ in India, have been revered for their exquisite taste and cultural significance for over 5,000 years. Beyond their delightful flavor, scientists from the University of Hyderabad have shed light on the remarkable benefits mango leaves offer in fighting colon cancer.
The Study:
Published in the American Chemical Society Pharmacology and Translational Science, the study led by Dr. Gangadhar, Dr. Suresh Kalangi, and Dr. Anil Kotha, under the guidance of Prof. Reddanna, highlights the protective effects of mangiferin, a compound found abundantly in mango leaves, against experimentally induced colitis—a form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
The study demonstrates mangiferin's ability to prevent mucosal erosion and inflammatory cell infiltration induced by acetic acid, along with its potential anticancer effects on colon cancer cells.
Nutritional Composition:
Mangoes are rich in essential nutrients such as Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, and Vitamin C, which bolster the body's immune system. Moreover, the combination of polyphenols and fiber present in mangoes aids in improving gut health and relieving constipation. Mangiferin, primarily concentrated in mango leaves and peels, exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties.
Expert Insights:
Dr. Sharma, a gastroenterologist from APOLLO Hospitals, Hyderabad, emphasizes, "The rising incidence of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in India calls for effective preventive measures. The findings of this study highlight the potential of mangoes, particularly mangiferin, in mitigating gastrointestinal disorders."
According to Hyderabad nutritionist Dr. Patel, "Incorporating mangoes into one's diet can contribute to overall gut health. The diverse array of nutrients and bioactive compounds in mangoes make them a valuable addition to a balanced diet."
”The increasing prevalence of Inflammatory Bowel Disease underscores the importance of exploring natural remedies for gastrointestinal ailments. Traditional Indian mangoes have emerged as a promising solution, offering both palatability and therapeutic benefits” said Nikita Bodapati, a Hyderabad Nutritionist.
“As we navigate an era marked by dietary shifts and lifestyle changes, embracing the medicinal properties of mangoes can serve as a simple yet effective strategy for maintaining gastrointestinal wellness. With further research and clinical studies, mangoes, enriched with mangiferin, could potentially emerge as a clinical candidate for the treatment of IBD and other gastrointestinal disorders” concluded Dr. Patel.
