Massive fire at Deccan Knit Wear Sports Shop in Ramgopalpet

Hyderabad: A massive fire broke out at the Deccan Knit Wear Sports Shop in Nallagutta under the Ramgopalpet police station limits at around 10-10:30 am on Thursday morning.

According to sources, six people were inside the building at the time of the fire and four have been rescued. Rescue operations to trace the remaining two people are underway.



Thick smoke covered the building and spread to other neighbouring areas. The fire department and the NDRF team took around two hours to douse the fire and bring the situation under control.




The cause of the fire is not yet known.


According to sources, tonnes of fabric are kept in the ground floor, The fire has spread to five floors of the building. The DRF teams suspect that the ground floor of the building has been damaged, and if the fire continues, it is expected that the total building might collapse. Explosions are heard from inside the building. According to sources, police and Disaster Response Force teams are in a meeting. Suspecting that the building might collapse, they are planning to get around 15-20 fire engines, and special battalion. A few fire engines are filled with foam, to control the chemical spread inside the building.

All the retail store owners in the area are worried as the smoke is very dense. Teams have safely shifted the people from neighbouring buildings. "The teams are unable to control the fire due to change in the wind directions. The buildings pillars are found to be weakened", said DRF officer.

"A total of 22 fire engines are on rescue operations. It might take another hour to bring the situation under control. We will also soon inquire about the situation", said Home Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali, who visited the spot.

Two slabs of the building collapsed. It is said that there is more resin, synthetic material inside the building. "We are evacuating the residents from neighbouring buildings, to avoid any causalities," said GHMC DRF Chief Viswajeeth.

Speaking to the media, Y Nagi Reddy, DG, Telangana State Disaster Response and Fire Services said, "This is one of the major fire accidents in Hyderabad. We have almost the entire fire department and GHMC on rescue operations. There is a possibility of short circuit, and the fire is continuing due to rexine and other highly flammable materials." Meanwhile, he said that during the rescue operation, two fire officers got injured and they are being treated at KIMS.
