Meet Rana and Rado: Cyberabad’s new police dogs to sniff out bombs and drugs
The total number of police canines currently working under the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate has reached 18 with the two additions.

Hyderabad: Two police dogs — Rana and Rado — will now be stationed at the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate to assist with detecting explosives and drugs.
CSW Headquarters ADCP Hanumantha Rao said that with these two police canines were transferred from the Telangana State CID.
The total number of police canines currently working under the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate has reached 18 with the two additions.
What are the canine units?
He said that 12 of them are for explosive detection, two for drug detection and four are tracker canines.
The canines that reported from the CID include ‘Rana’ (Belgian Malinois, 4 years old) and ‘Rado’ (Labrador, 10 years old).
What do the canine units work on?
The ADCP said that these canines are playing an important role in key tasks such as solving crimes, detecting explosives and tracking. He said that the services of these canines will be utilised more effectively with the leadership of BD Team RI Nagaraju and the cooperation of RSI Venkatesh.
He said that the police canines have been divided according to their duties.
He explained that explosive detection canines are used in cases like celebrity events, public representatives’ meetings, anti-sabotage checking and threat calls. He said that tracker canines are helping in the investigation in identifying suspects, searching for missing persons or objects, and finding evidence.
He said that narcotic canines are playing a key role in detecting drugs like marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, opium, MDMA and heroin.
Accolades for Cyberabad K9 squad
ADCP Hanumantha Rao said that the Cyberabad Police K9 Squad section is also showing talent in national and state-level competitions.
He said that the canine ‘Teja’ belonging to the narcotics category won a bronze medal in the 68th All India Police Duty Meet held in Ranchi in 2024-25 and won a bronze medal in the Telangana Police Duty Meet held in Hyderabad.
He said that the canine ‘Reena’, belonging to the explosives detection category, won bronze medals in the Telangana Police Duty Meet held in Hyderabad in 2024 and in Warangal in 2025.
Breed-wise, the canines belonging to the Labrador breed are the most, while the canines of the Doberman and Belgian Malinois breeds are also serving. The Labrador breed has Canadian origins and was developed in Britain, the Doberman is from Germany, and the Belgian Malinois is a special training breed from Belgium.
