Hyderabad: The Telangana State government is planning to build a modern interstate bus terminal at Aramghar to tackle Hyderabad’s worsening traffic congestion caused by district and interstate buses entering the city.

The proposed terminal aims to divert buses away from city roads and ease commuter movement, especially towards Shamshabad airport and IT hubs.

MGBS and JBS terminals overburdened

Currently, Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) and Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) serve as the main bus terminals in Hyderabad.

However, with the city’s rapid expansion and increasing population, these terminals are struggling to handle the growing passenger load.

This has resulted in heavy traffic jams across major roads connected to these hubs.

Land identified at Aramghar

To address this challenge, authorities have identified 7.22 acres near Aramghar X Roads along the National Highway 44 for the new terminal.

The land is currently occupied by the Indian Council of Social Welfare (ICSW) buildings. Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has agreed to pay Rs 6 crore in compensation for acquiring the site.

In January 2025, Transport minister Ponnam Prabhakar wrote to the Revenue Department seeking formal allocation of the land for the bus terminal project.

Vision for a modern terminal

Speaking about the initiative, Ponnam Prabhakar said, “MGBS was built to cater to the needs of its time. JBS served North Telangana passengers. Now, a new bus station is essential. We are inspecting land at Aramghar to make travel easier for South Telangana passengers. If Aramghar is not feasible, we will identify an alternative site.”

State buying new buses with support from women’s groups

The minister added that the government plans to build the terminal with state-of-the-art facilities to match the city’s growing needs.

“Hyderabad is expanding rapidly. We are proposing bus stations even in future city areas. The number of buses is increasing, and we are purchasing new buses with support from women’s groups. These initiatives will create employment opportunities,” Ponnam Prabhakar said.

New terminal will connect to Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka

The new bus terminal will have a modern look with modern facilities, ensuring easy connectivity to Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka regions.”

Officials said the land acquisition process is in progress and that the terminal, once completed, will play a crucial role in reducing traffic congestion and enhancing passenger convenience in Hyderabad.
