Hyderabad: Telangana government has decided to aggressively promote multi-level parking facilities to free up road space and ensure smoother vehicular movement in Hyderabad.
This comes after authorities identified roadside parking as a major cause of traffic congestion in the city,
To support the initiative, a dedicated mobile application will be launched to help commuters identify vacant parking slots in real time, reducing search time and traffic bottlenecks.
Decisions at high-level coordination meeting
The decision was taken at an inter-departmental coordination meeting chaired by City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar at the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre (TGICCC), Banjara Hills.
Senior officials from the police, GHMC, HYDRAA, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), and the electricity department participated in the discussions.
Bus stops to be relocated
To further streamline traffic flow, officials agreed to shift city bus stops that are currently causing bottlenecks. Such bus stops will be relocated to stretches with adequate road width to ensure buses can halt without obstructing traffic.
Junction development and road repairs
Authorities resolved to fast-track pending junction development works and take up road repairs on priority to reduce congestion at major intersections. Strengthening drainage systems to prevent waterlogging during the monsoon was also discussed.
Pedestrian safety and road cleanliness
Following the successful implementation of robotic drain cleaning in Malakpet, the system will be extended to other vulnerable points in the city. The meeting also reviewed the need to remove Sulabh complexes located in the middle of roads and to construct foot overbridges to improve pedestrian safety.
Railings at accident-prone stretches
In busy localities such as Purana Pul, Bahadurpura, Mehdipatnam market area, Masab Tank, and Begumpet, the absence of median railings has resulted in unsafe pedestrian crossings. Officials proposed installing railings in these areas to regulate crossings and prevent accidents.
Dedicated auto parking zones
Unregulated parking of autorickshaws, particularly near Osmania General Hospital and other crowded locations, has been identified as a major traffic concern. Authorities decided to create exclusive parking zones for autos to ease congestion.
Focus on inter-departmental coordination
City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar emphasised that effective coordination between police and civic agencies is key to resolving traffic issues. GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan said powers and budgets would be delegated to field-level officials to ensure faster execution of works.
Permanent solutions for waterlogging
HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath said waterlogging-prone areas would be thoroughly examined to provide permanent solutions. He also said steps were being taken to remove encroachments on footpaths.
Single-Contractor model for road restoration
Cyberabad Joint Commissioner Gajarao Bhupal suggested assigning both road excavation and restoration works to a single contractor to avoid delays in patchwork and ensure accountability.
Upgrading sewerage and drainage infrastructure
HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy said efforts were underway to strengthen sewerage and drainage networks, stressing that coordinated action by all departments is essential to effectively address traffic and pedestrian-related challenges in Hyderabad.
