Nallacheruvu’s restoration: Kukatpally residents celebrate kite festival at lake, HYDRAA chief joins
Hyderabad: The restored Nallacheruvu in Kukatpally came alive with festive spirit on Wednesday as HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath joined the locals in a vibrant kite festival.
The event symbolised the transformation of the once-encroached lake into a lively public space and a centre for community recreation.
Festive mood at the lakefront
Accepting an invitation from residents, the HYDRA Commissioner participated in the kite festival at Kukatpally’s Nallacheruvu.
Flying kites alongside children and youngsters, he recalled memories of his own childhood and youth, adding to the enthusiasm among the crowd.

From protests to public celebration
Addressing the gathering, the Commissioner said that when lake expansion works began in September 2024, the project had faced strong protests.
“Today, the same place is filled with a festive mood,” he remarked, calling it a moment of satisfaction for the HYDRAA team.
Lake expanded, floods curbed
He explained that Nallacheruvu, which had shrunk to about 16 acres due to encroachments, has now been expanded to nearly 30 acres.
Around 10 feet of accumulated silt was removed, sewage inflow was stopped and the lake depth was increased. These measures, he said, would help prevent flooding in surrounding areas and improve groundwater recharge.
Beyond beautification
The Commissioner stressed that lake development was not limited to cosmetic improvements.
“This project shows what true lake restoration should look like,” he said, adding that the lake now offers a pleasant environment and attracts walkers from as far as five kilometres away.
Free recreational facilities planned
As part of the development, several free public amenities are being introduced, including a shuttle court, community hall, yoga centre, cycling track and pickleball facilities. These, he said, would be accessible to all residents without any user charges.
More lakes in the pipeline
HYDRAA has already completed development of six lakes in the first phase, with Bathukamma Kunta inaugurated earlier.
Preparations are underway to open three more lakes in February.
In addition, the government has directed HYDRAA to take up the development of 14 more lakes soon. The Commissioner noted that restoring around 100 lakes in the city could significantly mitigate urban flooding.
Residents express gratitude
Locals said they never imagined the lake would be developed to such an extent. They thanked HYDRAA and the government for removing foul odour, improving the environment and creating a healthy space for walking and recreation.
The children thanked the Commissioner, who distributed sweets to them and to the residents, adding a warm touch to the celebrations.
