Hyderabad: In a proactive move to prevent fire accidents in the city, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has launched extensive fire safety awareness programmes across Hyderabad.

The initiative follows a series of recent fire incidents, including a major blaze at a furniture showroom in Nampally, which raised serious concerns over fire safety compliance.

Need for immediate awareness

HYDRAA officials said recent inspections revealed widespread violations of fire safety norms in commercial establishments.

Recognising the urgent need to sensitise the public, the agency decided to conduct large-scale awareness programmes alongside enforcement measures.

While establishments have been given a one-month deadline to strictly comply with fire safety regulations, awareness campaigns have been rolled out simultaneously.

Fire prevention and emergency response training

As part of the programme, HYDRAA officials educated shop owners, workers and the general public on preventive measures to avoid fire accidents.

Demonstrations were conducted on how to control fires during emergencies and minimise loss of life and property. Participants were trained in the use of fire extinguishers, the functioning of automatic water sprinklers and the importance of smoke detectors.

Officials also explained safe evacuation procedures and guided workers and traders on how to exit buildings safely during a fire.

Fire mock drills and emergency helplines

Fire mock drills were conducted at select locations to familiarise people with real-time emergency response. Shop owners were advised to clearly mark fire exit routes and ensure they remain unobstructed at all times.

In case of fire, the public was urged to immediately contact the Fire Services emergency number 101, HYDRAA Control Room 1070 or 9000113667.

Areas covered under the drive

The awareness programmes were conducted across several key localities, including Panjagutta, Narsingi, Mettuguda, Karwan, Shapurnagar, AS Rao Nagar, Chandanagar, RTC Cross Roads, Uppal, Begumpet, Chandrayangutta, Santosh Nagar and Jubilee Hills Road No. 45.

Lakdikapul, Madhapur, Sanathnagar, Rethibowli Cross Roads, Nagarjuna Circle, Gachibowli–Miyapur stretch, Dilsukhnagar, Alwal, Badangpet, Alkapuri Cross Roads, Attapur, Banjara Hills, Clock Tower Circle, ECIL, Kompally, Nampally, Shamshabad, Pedda Amberpet, Bachupally, and Tumukunta were also included.

Emphasis on compliance

HYDRAA officials reiterated that strict adherence to fire safety norms is essential to prevent avoidable disasters. The agency warned that enforcement action would follow oncethe compliance deadline expires.
