Hyderabad: Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar on Monday honoured Dinesh, a resident of Afzalgunj, for his exemplary courage in rescuing people trapped during the devastating fire at a furniture shop in Nampally on Saturday.
He also expressed deep condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
Nampally fire started in cellar being used as storage
The massive blaze broke out late Saturday night in a multi-storey building housing a furniture shop on Nampally Station Road.
The fire, which reportedly originated in the cellar where large quantities of furniture were stored, spread rapidly, filling the premises with thick smoke.
Several people were trapped inside, triggering panic and a large-scale emergency response. Fire services and rescue teams battled the flames through the night. The incident resulted in multiple casualties and injuries, raising serious concerns over fire safety norms and the use of cellars for storage and commercial purposes.
Dinesh risked life to save others
Commending the bravery displayed during the incident, Sajjanar said Dinesh stepped into the rescue operation as flames raged and cries for help echoed from within the building.
Ignoring the grave danger to his own life, Dinesh continued assisting victims, placing their safety above his own.
Honoured on Republic Day
In a post on X, the Police Commissioner observed that at a time when many choose to record accidents rather than help, Dinesh’s actions stood out as truly courageous.
He said it was a privilege to felicitate him on Republic Day, adding that such selfless acts inspire society and reaffirm faith in humanity.
Collective effort praised
Sajjanar also lauded the courage and presence of mind shown by Mohammed Zakir, Kalim, Rahim and Amar, who joined the rescue efforts despite the dangers. He further appreciated the swift, ground-level support extended by corporators Surekha Om Prakash and Zafar Khan immediately after the incident.
Condolences and message of unity
Describing the fire mishap as extremely unfortunate, the Police Commissioner conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and said he stood in solidarity with them during their time of grief.
He noted that the unity and brotherhood displayed beyond religious lines during the rescue operations reflected the true spirit of Hyderabad, highlighting the city’s enduring culture of harmony and compassion.
