The video of the accident went viral. It sent chills down the viewers' spine.
Gachibowli SHO, G Suresh confirmed that one person died and three were injured in the accident. "The tipper was carrying boulders. The overspeeding tipper hit three cars and three motorbikes. In the incident, one of the motorcyclists, a Swiggy delivery boy, died. Besides, two motorcyclists got injured with fractures. One of the persons sitting beside the driver in the tipper also got a leg fracture. He was found to be the tipper mechanic," said the SHO.
However, Gachibowli SHO ruled out that the tipper driver was drunk. "The driver was not in a drunken state. But he was overspeeding. At the signal, he applied a brake, but as he was carrying a heavy load, he was unable to control and stop the vehicle. Hence, the tipper rammed into the vehicles which were waiting at the red signal," he said.
Shaik Salauddin Founder & State President of Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) said that the family of the Swiggy employee should be compensated immediately as per the Workmen's Compensation Act.
The act is aimed to compensate employees by the employers for an injury by accident. "At the time of the accident, the Swiggy delivery boy was on duty and was on his way to deliver the order. His family is liable to be compensated as per the provisions of the Workmen's Compensation Act," said Shaik.
Shaik also added Swiggy and Zomato delivery boys do not have any social security schemes provided by the government. It was high time that both the state and central government consider extending such schemes to these workers as well.
"The Social Security Code 2020 bill was passed but neither the state government nor the centre has implemented it," he said. The objective of the Code on Social Security, 2020 is to amend and consolidate the existing labor laws relating to social security with the wider goal of extending social security benefits to all employees and workers irrespective of belonging to the organized or unorganized sector.
Shaik also added that the Swiggy management should also take complete responsibility and immediately hand over the compensation to the deceased employee's family.
