BRS, AIMIM oppose BJP’s naming of September 17
September 17 marks the integration of the former princely state of Hyderabad into the Indian Union. Last year, for the first time, the MIM celebrated September 17 by calling it National Integration Day. Then too they had organised programmes to commemorate the occasion. Asaduddin Owaisi also wrote to minister Amit Shah and to chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, urging them to celebrate September 17 as the ‘day of national integration’ instead of the ‘day of liberation’.
In 2022, the Telangana government too had organised three-day celebrations across the state on September 17. The TRS (now BRS) government had also called it National Integration Day. However, the BJP government at the Centre had always termed September 17 as Hyderabad Liberation Day, countering both state parties. Union Minister Amit Shah had visited Hyderabad and participated in the party celebrations to drive home the message.
The BRS and the AIMIM have continued to call September 17 National Integration Day even this year, countering BJP’s narrative and in view of the approaching Telangana State elections.
