Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Friday issued an order regarding the allotment of hostels to the students of Nizam College.
The UG students have been protesting for a week after they were denied hostel accommodation. They are demanding hostel facilities for all students.
"After due consideration of the issue, the Commissioner of Collegiate Education hereby directs to allot 50% of hostel capacity to UG girl students and 50% to PG girl students in the newly constructed hostel building with immediate effect. The principal, Nizam College (A), Hyderabad, shall take necessary action in the matter," read the order.
Speaking with NewsMeter, one of the students, Priya, said, "In the meeting yesterday (Thursday), we were told they would build an additional floor or building to accommodate all the UG students, along with 50% accommodation in the present building. But in today's order, nothing about the building has been specified."
Priya added, "We will continue the protest until 100% allocation is promised."
The order also specified, "The hostel building has been fully completed and handed over to Nizam College for allotment to girl students of Nizam College. The principal of Nizam College and university authorities have decided to allot the hostel only to postgraduate students of Nizam College."
Sharing the order, state education minister Sabitha Indra Reddy tweeted, "The government had taken this decision from a humanitarian perspective."

During the protest on 10 November, the students were called to discuss the issues with Naveen Mittal, the commissioner of college education and technical education. After the meeting, the students alleged that the official had directed the police to arrest five protesting students and file FIRs against them if they didn't withdraw the protest.
