No respite from cold wave in Telangana for next 2 days; mercury to stay below normal

Hyderabad: Cold wave conditions are expected to continue across multiple districts of Telangana for the next two days.

India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, said minimum temperatures are likely to remain well below normal in several parts of the state, including the capital city.

Temperatures to remain below normal

According to IMD-Hyderabad, minimum temperatures are expected to be 3°C to 4°C below normal at isolated pockets across Telangana over the next 48 hours.

“Minimum temperatures are likely to be below normal by 3 degree C to 4 degree C, in isolated pockets during the next two days over Telangana. Cold wave conditions are very likely to prevail at isolated pockets in Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Warangal, Hanumakonda, Jangaon, Siddipet, Sangareddy, Medak, and Kamareddy districts,” the IMD said in its forecast.

In the remaining districts, minimum temperatures are expected to range between 11°C and 15°C, as per the IMD’s five-day outlook.

Hyderabad to see sharp night-time drop

Meteorologists said parts of Hyderabad could record significantly lower temperatures during the late night and early morning hours.

Independent weather forecaster T. Balaji, popularly known as Telangana Weatherman, cautioned residents about the severity of the cold spell.

“Dear people of Telangana, including Hyderabad city, the next two nights and mornings will be severely cold with widespread single digits ahead in the entire Telangana. It’s going to be a massive chill. Please stay alert. Prepare your night and morning travel accordingly,” he posted on X.

He added, “A few parts in Hyderabad will witness 6 to 8 degree Celsius, while the north and western parts of Telangana will witness 5 to 8 degree Celsius.”

Why the cold wave

Meteorologists attribute the cold wave to dry north and northwesterly winds, clear night skies, and low humidity levels, which allow rapid heat loss from the ground during nighttime.

Meteorologist K.S. Sridhar told NewsMeter that the absence of cloud cover and calm wind conditions during the night are intensifying the drop in minimum temperatures, particularly over north and central Telangana.

Forecast for the next few days

• Next 2 days: Cold wave conditions likely at isolated pockets; minimum temperatures 3°C–4°C below normal

• Early mornings: Very cold conditions expected, especially in the north and western Telangana

• From Day 3 onward: Slight moderation in night temperatures likely, though mornings may remain chilly

The IMD has advised people, especially the elderly, children, and those with health conditions, to take precautions during nighttime and early morning hours as the cold wave persists.
