No sewage dumping into Musi, other lakes: HMWSSB plans new trunk mains under 2047 master plan
Hyderabad: To prevent pollution of the Musi River and nearby lakes, HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy has directed officials to ensure that sewage lines are strictly separated from stormwater drains and that no untreated wastewater enters natural water bodies.
He asked officials to submit proposals for new sewerage trunk mains and sub-lines in line with the 2047 Master Plan, keeping long-term environmental safeguards in focus.
Inspection of financial district areas
Following the directions of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, the HMWSSB MD conducted field inspections in Gachibowli, Nanakramguda and the Financial District, which are witnessing rapid urban growth.
Calculating population growth with sewerage needs
During the visit, Ashok Reddy reviewed the quantity of sewage being generated, the existing sewerage network and the capacity of trunk mains.
Officials were instructed to prepare mini sewerage master plans aligned with projected population growth and infrastructure expansion.
Strengthening sewerage infrastructure
He directed officials to compile data on existing drains, stormwater channels and trunk mains, and to plan upgrades wherever required to avoid overloading and leakages into natural drains.
STP capacity enhancement
Officials were asked to assess sewage generation in the Nanakramguda STP catchment area and take steps to enhance treatment capacity in view of future demand.
The feasibility of expanding existing STPs or setting up new ones was also discussed.
New trunk mains proposed
The MD instructed officials to submit proposals for diverting sewage from the Gachibowli–Kokapet stretch to the Kokapet STP and to explore alternative routing of sewage from low-lying Kokapet areas to nearby STPs to prevent discharge into lakes.
Reuse of treated water
Ashok Reddy also emphasised the reuse of treated water for non-potable purposes.
He asked officials to prepare DPRs for supplying treated water for landscaping and gardening along the Outer Ring Road and nearby facilities.
Digital monitoring of STPs
To improve oversight, officials were asked to develop a dedicated digital platform for real-time monitoring of sewage treatment performance across all STPs in the city.
