Hyderabad: The Cyberabad Traffic Police has installed 44 pelican signals in the commissionerate limits to improve pedestrian safety. The signals were inaugurated on August 25 by Cyberabad police commissioner Stephen Raveendra.

Pelican signals are pedestrian-activated traffic signals that give pedestrians a dedicated window of time to cross the road safely. The signals are equipped with push buttons that pedestrians can press to activate the signal. Once the signal is activated, the traffic lights will turn red for vehicles and green for pedestrians, allowing them to cross the road safely.

The 44 pelican signals have been installed at busy intersections and pedestrian crossings across the Cyberabad Commissionerate. The signals will be operated by 88 traffic wardens who have been hired on an outsourcing basis. The wardens will work during the traffic peak hours, from 9 am to 12 pm and 5 pm to 8 pm.

The traffic police said that the pelican signals will help to reduce pedestrian fatalities and injuries. They urged pedestrians to use the signals and to cross the road only when the signal is green.

The pelican signals are part of the Safe City Project, a joint initiative of the Cyberabad Traffic Police and the Safe City Project Team to improve traffic safety and security in the Cyberabad Commissionerate.

In addition to the pelican signals, the Safe City Project has also installed CCTV cameras, speed guns, and other traffic enforcement measures. The project has also been working to improve public awareness of traffic safety.
