The incident occurred in Pragath Nagar, NRI Colony in Bachupally, Hyderabad on September 5 at around 11 am. The streets in the NRI colony were underwater, similar to many parts of Hyderabad which had witnessed severe water-logging due to heavy rains.
CCTV footage showed the boy, Mithun, following an elderly person on a road filled with rainwater. He did not realise that a manhole in his path was open and stepped into it. The open manhole was overflowing with water from heavy rains. The boy was washed away in the canal, and his body was later found near the Nizampet Rajiv Gruhakalpa area.
āA case has been altered and cases were booked against the watchman and president of the apartment. They were negligent in opening the canal cap and leaving it without closing,ā said Bachupally CI Suman Kumar.
