Old City Metro project gains pace; affected properties reduced to 900, say officials

Hyderabad: The long-awaited Metro Rail extension from MGBS to Chandrayangutta in Hyderabad’s Old City has finally picked up momentum. With road widening and pillar marking started, officials are fast-tracking the project while significantly reducing the number of affected properties.

Property impact brought down with realignment

Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) Managing Director NVS Reddy said the corridor’s alignment has been redesigned to minimise disruptions.

“Initially, around 1,100 properties were expected to be affected. Through engineering changes, we’ve reduced that to about 900,” he said.

So far, compensation has been awarded for 412 properties, demolition has been completed for 380, and Rs 360 crore has been disbursed to property owners.

Night shifts to reduce public inconvenience

Land acquisition and demolition in the Old City come with unique challenges.

“Structures are tightly packed, and overhead utility lines add complexity. We’re proceeding cautiously and mostly working at night to avoid inconvenience,” NVS Reddy added. A detailed action plan has been prepared to complete the remaining acquisitions swiftly.

Pillar marking, soil testing underway

Pillar locations have been finalised, with spacing at approximately 25 meters (82 feet) along the corridor. Marking has begun, and a geotechnical agency is set to begin soil bearing tests shortly.

A DGPS survey was also conducted to avoid impacting historical and sensitive structures. Temporary Bench Marks (TBMs) are now fixed to assist in survey work during construction.

Utility shifting in progress

To clear the way for construction, civic departments are working to shift underground water, sewer, and drainage lines. Overhead electricity lines will be moved underground, as per Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s directive. HAML has asked the Water Board, GHMC, and TGSPDCL to submit cost estimates for utility relocation.

Metro officials and field staff from all departments are working around the clock to map and safeguard utilities. With daily reviews being led by MD NVS Reddy, the project is being pushed ahead with a focus on speed, coordination, and minimal disruption, according to a press release issued on Sunday.
