By Anoushka Caroline Williams Published on 15 Feb 2024 5:32 AM GMTHyderabad: Osmania General Hospital (OGH) is again in the news as civil society calls for preserving the old structure while constructing a new one for patients.
Members of the OGH Conservation Group addressed a press conference and the focus was on the fate of the historic hospital.
A representative emphasized, "Congress had already put in their manifesto to maintain the existing structure; we just reminded them." This highlights the commitment to preserving the historical significance of OGH.
A speaker highlighted the OGH structure's century of service, stating, "The structure is only 100 years old, serving thousands of patients every day without any leak or broken roof."
Drawing comparisons with older buildings, it was emphasized that OGH outperforms structures four times its age, remaining functional and well-maintained. Additionally, discussions around the 23-acre premises, with 7 acres still vacant, sparked conversations about the potential for constructive use. "This vacant space can be utilized for a new structure," expressed another speaker.
Drawing parallels with the example of railways retaining old trains alongside the latest electric Vande Bharat, the conference showcased the coexistence of tradition and modernization. The focus was on finding a balanced approach that respects tradition while addressing the evolving needs of the healthcare system.
Putting Politics Aside: Assuring Citizens
A resounding sentiment echoed throughout the conference emphasized putting politics behind and assuring citizens of Hyderabad about their iconic hospital. The call to prioritize the needs and sentiments of citizens over political considerations underscores the urgency of addressing concerns about OGH's future.
Heritage Restoration, Not Demolition
The overarching theme of the press conference emphasized the need to restore, not demolish, the heritage represented by OGH. As discussions about the future of OGH continue, the plea to preserve its historical significance as an essential part of Hyderabad's heritage takes center stage.
Asaduddin Owaisi's Critique: Delay in Upgradation and Construction
Against the backdrop of the OGH discussions, Asaduddin Owaisi, in 2023, criticized the BRS government for neglecting the upgradation and construction of a new building for Osmania General Hospital in the Old City. He termed it as a blatant injustice against the people of Hyderabad.
Contrast with NIMS Extension
Referring to former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao's foundation stone laying for the NIMS-Hyderabad hospital extension for Rs 1,571 crore, Owaisi questioned the priorities, tweeting, "@TelanganaCMO is laying the foundation stone for the extension of NIMS at the cost of Rs 1,571 crore. I have been continuously demanding Osmania Hospitalās urgently needed upgrade & new building.
Expressing Ire over Delay
Expressing frustration over the delay, Owaisi stated, "Despite my meeting last year in May with engineers, health minister Harish Rao, and other ministers, no progress has been made. This is a blatant injustice against the people of the Hyderabad constituency. It is also a grave disservice to doctors, medical students, and people of Telangana who come to Hyderabad for treatment."
Cost Estimate and Public Funds Concerns
Highlighting the inadequacy of the dilapidated OGH building for modern healthcare needs, Owaisi mentioned, "The restoration of the old building and construction of the new building was estimated to be Rs 560 crore. This amount is peanuts for a 'prosperous' state government that seems to have funds for everything in the world." He questioned the use of public money if it's not helping the poorest get life-saving healthcare.
Conclusion: Urgency for Action and Heritage Preservation
As the discourse surrounding OGH's fate unfolds, the urgency for action and the preservation of its historical significance become increasingly apparent.
āThe need for a balanced approach that respects tradition while addressing contemporary healthcare requirements remains at the forefront of these crucial discussionsā stated a representative.
