Hyderabad: Traffic police teams across Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri booked more than 730 motorists for drunk driving over the weekend.

The special drives, conducted between March 20 and 21, revealed a worrying trend: a majority of offenders were two-wheeler riders, with several recording dangerously high blood alcohol levels.

Hyderabad registers 343 cases in two days

Hyderabad Traffic Police booked 343 offenders during a two-day special drive.

Three-wheelers: 24

Four-wheelers and others: 32

BAC level analysis

30–50 mg: 71 cases

51–100 mg: 143 cases (highest)

101–150 mg: 77 cases

151–200 mg: 30 cases

201–250 mg: 14 cases

251–300 mg: 4 cases

Above 300 mg: 4 cases

Officials noted that a significant number of drivers fell in the moderate to high intoxication range, posing serious risks on city roads.

Cyberabad: 173 caught, warning of severe legal consequences

Cyberabad Traffic Police apprehended 173 offenders in its weekend drive.

All offenders will be produced before the court.

Strict legal warning

Police cautioned that drunk driving leading to fatal accidents will attract charges under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), which carries a maximum punishment of 10 years in jail along with a fine.

Traffic authorities reiterated that special drives would continue regularly, with no leniency for offenders. Citizens have been urged to avoid driving under the influence and to opt for safer alternatives.

“Drunk driving is not just a violation, but a potential threat to life,” officials stressed, calling for greater public responsibility to ensure safer roads.
