Hyderabad: Traffic police teams across Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri booked more than 730 motorists for drunk driving over the weekend.
The special drives, conducted between March 20 and 21, revealed a worrying trend: a majority of offenders were two-wheeler riders, with several recording dangerously high blood alcohol levels.
Hyderabad registers 343 cases in two days

Officials noted that a significant number of drivers fell in the moderate to high intoxication range, posing serious risks on city roads.

Strict legal warning
Police cautioned that drunk driving leading to fatal accidents will attract charges under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), which carries a maximum punishment of 10 years in jail along with a fine.
Traffic authorities reiterated that special drives would continue regularly, with no leniency for offenders. Citizens have been urged to avoid driving under the influence and to opt for safer alternatives.
“Drunk driving is not just a violation, but a potential threat to life,” officials stressed, calling for greater public responsibility to ensure safer roads.
