Overcast skies, light rain set a cozy mood for Christmas in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: With gloomy skies and sporadic micro showers in the heart of winter, Hyderabad's unusual weather has added to the fun of the ongoing year-end holiday season's Christmas Day celebrations.

The skies remained cloudy throughout Wednesday, with some areas of Hyderabad experiencing light precipitation ranging from 1 to 2 mm. The Telangana Development Planning Society's (TSDPS) automated weather stations recorded minimum temperatures of about 20 degrees Celsius.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad has said that light to moderate rain or thundershowers are very likely to occur in isolated places of Telangana till December 29. In Hyderabad, morning conditions are anticipated to be misty or cloudy with light precipitation.

The apparent low-pressure area over southwest and adjoining West Central Bengal continued in the same area on Wednesday over South Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu coast. It is likely to move northwest over West Central and Southwest Bengal in the next 24 hours, gradually weakening as a low pressure over South Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu coast.

Low-level winds in Telangana State on Wednesday are mainly from the east and southeast. Scattered light to moderate rains is likely in some districts of Telangana State for the next three days starting from Wednesday. Some districts are likely to experience fog in the morning at isolated places, and minimum temperatures are likely to be 2 to 4 degrees above normal during the next three days.

Taking on his X account, T Balaji aka Telangana Weatherman wrote, “It is rare to see such widespread rains on Christmas Day. “To my memory, I have not seen such rain in the last 10 years in the city. Though it’s been light-moderate rains, it is very rare.” He also pointed out that in 2023, the winter was warm and less rainy while in 2024, the winter was cool and had more rainy days.
