Hyderabad: Travel on a 15-kilometer stretch of National Highway 44 between Secunderabad and Medchal has become a nightmare for motorists.
The unattended and pending works on the flyovers and roads on a 15-km stretch are leading to daily chaos for motorists and commuters.
The stretch has turned into an accident-prone zone. Official data reveals this stretch witnessed 217 fatal accidents, injuring 2000 people in 2025.The
Confederation of Resident Welfare Associations (CRWA) has petitioned to Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to intervene and finish the pending works of flyovers and roads.
In the letter addressed to the union minister, national president of COWA, Tejendra Pal Yyagi says, " What was once an arterial corridor connecting Hyderabad to Nagpur is now a section filled with half-made piers, abandoned works of flyovers, rusted barricades, and hazardous road surfaces. This time to travel on this road has increased due to these blockages, and during peak hours, commuters are stuck on this road for hours."
NH-44: Accident Data
The human cost of these delays is stark. According to data compiled by the SaveLIFE Foundation and local traffic authorities, NH-44 remains one of the deadliest corridors in the region.
From January 2023 to October 2025, there were a total of 742 fatal accidents.
Which are the areas?
Potholes and "sudden lane drops" near construction sites at Suchitra Junction, Kompally, and Bowenpally are cited as primary causes. Just last week, on January 1, 2026, a pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run near the Medchal checkpost—a grim reminder of the vulnerability of those navigating these unfinished zones.
A Project in Gridlock
The infrastructure bottleneck stems from two major stalled initiatives:
The Suchitra–Kompally Flyovers: Originally slated for a December 2024 completion, the deadline has been pushed to April 2026. Officials attribute the "snail's pace" to contractor inefficiency and financial hurdles.
Paradise–Dairy Farm Elevated Corridor: Works on this 5.4 km stretch, which includes a unique underground tunnel near Begumpet Airport, finally entered "fast-track mode" in late 2025, but the resulting diversions have paralyzed traffic in Secunderabad Cantonment.
The Call for Action
In their letter to the Union Minister, CoRWA leadership, including President Col Tejendra Pal Tyagi (retd), expressed appreciation for the Ministry’s "supersonic speed" elsewhere but pleaded for a personal priority review of the Secunderabad-Medchal stretch.
Commuters are demanding immediate "motorable" conditions, including:
Restoration of service roads is currently filled with slush and debris.
Proper lighting and reflective signage at diversion points to prevent night-time collisions.
Accountability for contractors who have left piers standing without progress for months.
CORWA has urged the minister to personally look into the issues of NH 44 on a priority basis and direct the authorities to complete the works quickly.
