Here is how to protect leather shoes in summer

Hyderabad: Most of us are living with the misconception that leather needs to be protected from water and take a lot of care to protect our shoes and other leather accessories during the monsoon. But not many know that leather needs to be protected from heat.

Summer is here and the sun is already giving us a taste of how scorching it is going to be. While travelling, especially on two-wheelers, people can feel their shoes and bags getting hotter. That is because we don’t take proper care of leather, said Tarun Oblum, Bespoke Shoemaker, Oblum Leather Works.

When asked whether heat or water can cause damage to leather, Tarun said, “We keep forgetting that leather is nothing but skin. Just like how we care for our skin, we need to do the same for leather as well. During summer, we apply a lot of sunscreen and in winter we choose a nice moisturiser. In the same way, leather needs wax and creams to last longer.”

Tarun further added that men from the older generations used to make sure their leather shoes were waxed and that is how the shine was retained. “But now, wax has silica mixed in it. When exposed to heat and water, the silica turns the leather silver. Not many know this but good leather naturally tends to absorb water, just like our skin,” explained Tarun.

Leather shoes require special care during the summer months to prevent damage from heat, sweat, and water. Here are some tips that can help you protect your leather shoes this summer:

1. Clean and condition your leather shoes regularly. Use a gentle leather cleaner and conditioner to keep the leather supple and moisturised.

2. Use a protective spray. A protective spray will help create a barrier against water and stains. Be sure to choose a spray appropriate for the type of leather your shoes are made of.

3. Avoid direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can cause the leather to dry out and crack if proper care is not taken. If possible, store your shoes in a cool, dry place, away from the sun’s rays.

4. If your leather accessories do get caught in the rain, be sure to dry them thoroughly before wearing them again.

5. Use shoe trees. Shoe trees will help to maintain the shape of your shoes and prevent creasing. They also help to absorb moisture, which can help prevent mould and mildew.

By following these tips, you can help protect your leather shoes and other accessories and keep them looking great all summer long.
