Hyderabad: On Thursday, the Telangana High Court pronounced its verdict directing the state government to provide reservations in education and employment opportunities and establish a state welfare board for the transgender community in the Telangana State.

The Telangana High Court Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice CV Bhaskar Reddy pronounced the order directing the state government to extend the benefits of Aasara Pension Scheme GO MS No 17 of 2014 to transgender persons.

Further, the state of Telangana is directed to issue government orders and administrative instructions providing reservations to persons belonging to the transgender community in matters of educational institutions and recruitment in government and public service.

The court directed the state to establish a state welfare board for transgender persons in Telangana State, which would come under the Telangana Legal Services Authority. This will be a permanent body through which transgender persons can will have access to legal services.

The state welfare board of transgender persons in Telangana State shall monitor various steps taken by the Government of Telangana for the upliftment of the transgender community including the proper implementation of the Transgender Persons Protection of Rights Act, 2019, and Transgender Persons Protection of Rights Act, 2020.

After pronouncing the above directions, the court closed the three public interest litigations regarding the case.
