IMD Explains Weather Pattern

The IMD Hyderabad office has attributed the current rains to a low-pressure area over Andhra Pradesh, which is strengthening the southwest monsoon flow.

Meteorologist K. S. Sridhar speaking to NewsMeter said, ā€œThis system is drawing in a large amount of moisture from the Bay of Bengal. We expect moderate to heavy rains to persist in many parts of Telangana, including Hyderabad, until at least Friday. Intense spells are possible, especially in districts under the red alert.ā€

ā€œThunderstorms with lightning are expected in several places. People should avoid open areas during lightning activity and watch for flash flooding in low-lying zones.ā€ He added.

Alerts and Forecasts

Based on the current weather system, the IMD has issued:

• Red Alert for districts including Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Medak, Suryapet, Vikarabad, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall

• Orange Alert for Hyderabad, Adilabad, Hanamkonda, Jangaon, and others, heavy to very heavy rain expected

• Yellow Alert for Karimnagar, Nalgonda, Nagarkurnool, and more, possibility of heavy rainfall in isolated places

The alert period extends through August 17, with the heaviest activity forecast over the next 48 hours.

Impact on Daily Life

The downpour has already caused:

• Waterlogging in several parts of Hyderabad, slowing morning traffic

• Overflowing drains in low-lying colonies

• Reports of reservoirs and tanks nearing full capacity in districts such as Vikarabad and Mahabubnagar

• School closures in the most affected areas, with GHMC-run schools in Hyderabad operating on shortened schedules

• Advisories to IT companies to allow employees to work from home in flood-prone zones

Safety Advice from Authorities

IMD and disaster management officials have urged residents to:

• Avoid travel through flooded streets or causeways

• Stay indoors during lightning activity

• Keep emergency numbers accessible

• Follow real-time updates from the state disaster management authority and IMD bulletins

ā€œThe rainfall is beneficial for reservoirs and agriculture, but it comes with risks. Awareness and timely precautions will help prevent casualties during such intense weather events,ā€ said Sridhar.
