Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched a Rs 1.68-crore Model Footpath project along the busy Ramanaidu Studio–BVB Junction corridor in Jubilee Hills.

The high-footfall stretch, located between Road No. 79/82 Junction and CVR Channel on Road No. 82 under Circle-18 of the Khairatabad Zone, is being redeveloped to ensure safer, smoother and more inclusive pedestrian movement.

The works began on November 24 and are scheduled for completion within four months.

Coverage and execution timeline

The project will cover 1,000 metres on the left-hand side and 500 metres on the right-hand side of the road.

Civic officials said traffic management measures will be in place during execution to minimise inconvenience, given the heavy vehicular and pedestrian movement in the area.

Plastic waste into durable pavers

As part of its sustainability drive, GHMC is deploying recycled plastic paver blocks in place of conventional concrete tiles. These pavers contain 65–70 per cent post-consumer single-use plastic, including multilayer plastic (MLP), LDPE and LLDPE, blended with fillers and mineral additives.

The blocks offer a compressive strength of over 35 MPa, zig-zag modular design (225 mm × 112 mm × 50 mm), high durability for heavy pedestrian traffic, and a significant reduction in plastic waste sent to landfills.

Solar-powered smart footpath

Adding a smart, green dimension to the project, the footpath will be fitted with a 10 kWp grid-connected solar power system.

The installation will feature high-capacity solar panels, grid-tied inverters, steel mounting structures, automated cleaning systems, distribution boxes and comprehensive lightning and earthing protection.

The solar canopy will provide shade for commuters while contributing surplus clean energy to the power grid.

Barrier-free access for the visually challenged

The redesigned footpath will include tactile pavers and guidance rails to assist visually challenged pedestrians. Officials said the inclusive design ensures safe and independent movement for all users, in line with national urban accessibility standards.

GHMC’s push for walkable Hyderabad

The Jubilee Hills project forms part of GHMC’s broader strategy to strengthen non-motorised transport infrastructure and build people-centric public spaces.

The civic body aims to replicate the Model Footpath design in other high-pedestrian zones across Hyderabad after assessing its performance.

Once completed, the upgraded corridor is expected to significantly enhance pedestrian safety, urban aesthetics and environmental sustainability in one of the city’s premium residential and commercial pockets.
