Hyderabad: Hyderabad Traffic Police (HTP) on Saturday launched a special enforcement drive to curb the growing menace of underage driving.
The initiative aims to prevent fatal accidents and improve road safety across the city.
Legal Action Against Violators
The HTP has stated that necessary action will be taken against violators during the drive. This includes cancellation of vehicle registration for 12 months and legal action against the vehicle owner, typically a parent or guardian.
Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it is illegal for individuals below the legal driving age to operate a motor vehicle. Section 199A of the Act stipulates that in cases where a juvenile is found driving, the owner of the vehicle will be held responsible. Penalties include fines, imprisonment, and cancellation of the vehicleās registration.
Moreover, the juvenile will be barred from obtaining a Learnerās Licence or Driving Licence until the age of 25.
Ongoing Monitoring and Implementation
Traffic officials will monitor roads closely and conduct checks to identify underage drivers. The enforcement will continue over the coming weeks with the objective of creating awareness and reducing violations.
The HTP has called on citizens to cooperate with authorities and contribute to maintaining road safety in the city.
