Hyderabad: In a step aimed at strengthening road safety education from an early age, the State Transport Department has inaugurated the first Traffic Awareness Park in a government school in Telangana, at the Aaliya Government Model School near LB Stadium in Basheerbagh.
The facility was formally opened by Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar as part of the ongoing Road Safety Month celebrations.
First of its kind in government schools
This is the first traffic park to be set up in a government school in the State.
Developed with the support of UNICEF, the park has been constructed for Rs 14 lakh with the objective of creating traffic awareness among students at the school level itself.
Officials said the initiative is designed to instil road discipline and safe behaviour among children through experiential learning rather than classroom instruction alone.
Learning road safety by doing
Designed on a ‘learning by doing’ model, the park features miniature roads, junctions, curves, footpaths and traffic signal points. It also includes speed breakers, zebra crossings, school zone markings and signboards such as ‘No Horn’, enabling students to understand real-life traffic situations.
Children ride small bicycles within the park and learn where to stop, how to take turns and how to respond to changing traffic signals.
Trained students guide their peers, explaining signal rules and correct road behaviour, while pedestrian safety practices are demonstrated on model roads.
Open to students from all schools
Transport Department officials said the park will also be accessible to students from all schools, allowing more children to benefit from practical traffic education.
“Such traffic parks will be expanded to more schools across the city to improve road safety awareness among young learners,” said Joint Transport Commissioner C Ramesh.
The initiative is expected to play a key role in shaping responsible road users and reducing traffic violations in the long run.
