Telangana High Court issued notices to Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary, Medical and Health Department, and others after it received a letter about the inadequate facilities at Koti Maternity Hospital, Hyderabad.

Rapolu Bhaskar, an advocate had written to the Chief Justice informing him that the Koti Maternity Hospital lacked basic infrastructure and other facilities.

He said pregnant women, who visit this hospital, find themselves in a deplorable position. He said patients are forced to stand in serpentine queues as the hospital lacks requisite chairs.

A division bench of Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice N. Tukaramji converted the letter into PIL and issued notices to the Chief Secretary; Principal Secretary, Medical and Health Department; Commissioner, Health and Family Welfare; T. Vaidya Vidhana Parishad, Superintendent, Government Maternity Hospital; District Collector, Hyderabad and the Director of Medical Education.

The petitioner in his letter alleged that the patients are forced to purchase mandatory medicines from private medical shops.

Nearly 300-400 pregnant women from across the state visit Koti Maternity Hospital every day with the confidence that they will get proper medical aid and free medicines, he said.

The petitioner said the hospital has been invaded by rats and termites, which put pregnant women and their attendants at risk. He said patients spend sleepless nights in the hospital because of the rodent terror.
