Rs 1,000 crore boost for Osmania’s growth is largest in university’s history, says V-C Prof Molugaram

Hyderabad: In the recently announced Telangana State Budget for education, a record Rs 1,000 crore was allotted for Osmania University (OU) towards its overall development.

Thanking the State government for the allocation, OU Vice-Chancellor Prof Kumar Molugaram said that it is the single largest financial infusion for the university in its 100-year history.

The OU V-C hailed the move as a ‘momentous development’, stating that the university is poised for massive structural and academic transformation.

Aiming to become a global research club

In a formal statement, Prof. Molugaram extended his gratitude to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, emphasising that the funds would catalyse OU’s journey toward becoming a global research hub.

“This is more than just a financial grant; it is an investment in the intellectual capital of Telangana,” Prof. Molugaram stated. “We are deeply appreciative of the Chief Minister for remaining true to his word.”

A promise made to OU in 2025

The allocation isn’t just a budgetary surprise; it is the fulfilment of a high-profile commitment made by CM Revanth Reddy in 2025, the government said.

During a series of visits to the campus last year, the Chief Minister recognised the ageing infrastructure of the historic university and the pressing need for modernisation to keep pace with global academic standards.

Upgrading infrastructure and research capabilities

During those interactions, CM Revanth pledged to restore the ‘lost glory’ of Osmania University, promising a dedicated corpus to overhaul hostels, upgrade labs and boost research funding.

The budgetary announcement serves as the concrete realisation of that policy roadmap, the government said.

What is the roadmap for Osmania’s transformation?

The university administration, led by Prof. Molugaram and Registrar Prof. G Naresh Reddy, has outlined a strategic plan for the funds:

1. Infrastructure Overhaul: Modernising heritage buildings and constructing new, state-of-the-art residential facilities for students.

2. Research Excellence: Equipping laboratories with international-standard technology to foster innovation.

3. Global Positioning: Enhancing campus-wide digital infrastructure to support a ‘superlative’ learning environment.

The record Rs 1,000 crore allocation to OU is a cornerstone of the State government’s broader strategy to elevate Telangana’s education sector to a competitive international level.
