Rs 120 crore plan to fix traffic trouble spots on Shaikpet–Masab Tank route; Sajjanar, Karnan inspect corridor

Hyderabad: Aiming to decongest one of Hyderabad’s busiest stretches, the city police and GHMC have initiated a comprehensive plan to develop a model corridor from Shaikpet Flyover to Masab Tank.

During a joint field inspection on Wednesday, senior officials identified key bottlenecks and finalised immediate and long-term measures to improve traffic flow, pedestrian safety and road infrastructure.

The team said Rs 120 crore will be allocated to fix the pending issues with the public infrastructure.

Joint inspection flags key traffic issues

Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar, IPS, and GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, IAS, along with senior officials, conducted an on-ground inspection across the corridor.

The team identified major problem areas, including water-logging points at the Shaikpet Flyover ramp and Tolichowki, and reviewed congestion-prone junctions such as NMDC and Nanal Nagar. Officials directed departments to remove road obstructions and fast-track ongoing works.

Rs 120 crore allocated for traffic improvements

Police Commissioner Sajjanar stated that traffic issues have been categorised into ‘immediate’ and ‘long-term’ solutions for phased execution.

GHMC Commissioner Karnan announced a budget allocation of Rs 120 crore, Rs 20 crore for each zone, to implement traffic improvement measures. He also confirmed that pending works around KBR Park would be completed within the next 18 to 24 months.

From FOB to pelican signals

Under the Tolichowki Traffic Police limits, several pedestrian-friendly measures were announced:

- New Foot Over Bridge (FOB) at Brindavan Colony Road No. 1

- Pelican signals and zebra crossings at Shaikpet Nala

To address civic issues, drainage leakages at the Tolichowki U-turn and Al-Hasnath Colony will be repaired. A CC road will be laid from Ice Magic Parlour to Brindavan Colony, while a new bus shelter will come up near Majestic Function Hall.

Additionally, three trees near Shah Ghouse Hotel will be relocated to facilitate widening works.

Road widening and encroachment removal

To streamline traffic flow:

- The rotary at Nanal Nagar Junction will be reduced in size and adjoining roads widened

- Central medians and select trees between Rethibowli and Nanal Nagar will be removed

- Key obstructions, including Ramalayam Arch, Boddurayi near Golf Club Road and tombs at Shaikpet Nala, will be cleared

A ‘free left’ turn from Balika Bhavan towards Tolichowki will also be enabled by removing trees and electric poles.

Major works in Asif Nagar–Masab Tank stretch

In the Asif Nagar and Masab Tank zones, the focus will be on infrastructure upgrades:

- New FOB at SD Eye Hospital and removal of rumble strips

- Road widening through land acquisition near NMDC and a commercial outlet opposite the hospital

- Installation of height restriction barriers and warning boards on Masab Tank Flyover

- Shifting of a transformer at the Mehdipatnam end

- A new slip road connecting Pochamma Basti to Road No. 12 is also planned to reduce internal congestion.

The planned interventions are expected to significantly ease congestion, enhance commuter safety, and improve overall traffic management along the crucial Shaikpet–Masab Tank corridor, officials said.
