Rudra Foods fined Rs 15,000 after fly found inside Osmania biscuit

Hyderabad: Almost two months after a customer lodged a complaint over a fly baked into an Osmania biscuit, a fine of Rs 15,000 has been imposed on the manufacturer and a stock worth Rs 80,000 in total was seized from the premises.

On September 2, a customer named Vinay Vangala found a fly baked into his packet of Osmania biscuits in Hyderabad. He had consumed nearly half of the packet when he found the fly inside the biscuit. The manufacturer S Rudra Foods, based in Jalpally, mentioned having a valid certificate from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

He lodged a formal complaint with the local food inspector and the food safety commissioner.

“Fly also baked in Osmania biscuit! Need ur att'n@GHMCOnline (sic),” he posted on X along with a photo tagging the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) X handle.

This sparked concerns about the effectiveness of the FSSAI certification process as well as its monitoring quality. Another X user stated, “Authorities must carry out a thorough investigation to stop similar incidents from happening again and to regain public confidence in the food safety system.”

Responding to the tweets, a GHMC food inspector assured investigation into the matter. They mentioned that stock worth Rs 36,000 was seized on the spot.

An adjudication case has been filed in Ranga Reddy Collectorate and the case was heard on October 26, following which the fine was imposed.
