Rejuvenated lakes in Hyderabad to host Sankranti Kite Festival; HYDRAA chief Ranganath inspects works
Hyderabad: With the Sankranti kite festival approaching, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has been asked to ensure that all rejuvenated lakes in the city are fully prepared to host the festivities, with emphasis on safety, sanitation and public amenities.
Kite festival at rejuvenated lakes
As part of the State government’s plan to celebrate the kite festival from January 13 to 15 at restored water bodies, HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath on Wednesday conducted field inspections at select lakes.
He reviewed the progress of development works at Thammidikunta in Madhapur and Nalla Cheruvu in Kukatpally, issuing detailed instructions to officials on final preparations.
No direct sewage inflow into lakes
The Commissioner underlined that untreated sewage must not be allowed to enter lakes directly.
He directed officials to immediately operationalise Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) so that only treated water flows into the lakes. Cleanliness around STP sites must be ensured, he said, adding that nearby government land could be utilised wherever required.
Parks, greenery and public spaces
Beyond water conservation, the focus should be on transforming lake surroundings into vibrant public spaces, the Commissioner said. He called for the development of parks, enhanced greenery and better landscaping.
Facilities such as shaded seating for senior citizens, play areas for children and walking-friendly pathways were stressed to make the lake precincts inclusive and welcoming.
Coordination for smooth conduct of festivities
For the kite festival to be conducted smoothly, Commissioner Ranganath asked officials to coordinate closely with the Tourism Department and other concerned agencies. He instructed that priority be given to public safety, drinking water facilities, adequate toilets and well-planned parking arrangements to avoid inconvenience to visitors.
Dust control and water management
As restoration works are still in progress at several locations, officials were directed to regularly sprinkle water to prevent dust and air pollution. With the monsoon season over, the Commissioner also asked for the early installation of STPs to ensure sustained water levels in the lakes.
Integrating lakes with Musi rejuvenation
In the context of the State government’s Musi River rejuvenation programme, HYDRAA was asked to ensure that clean lake water ultimately flows into the Musi.
