Hyderabad: The 4th YAI Secunderabad Club Youth Regatta 2024 was held from July 7 to 12 at Hussain Sagar Lake. The event featured races in the Optimist, ILCA 4 boys and girls, 420 open and mixed and 29er open classes. The races were overseen by a renowned international jury, IRO, and technical team, ensuring adherence to international standards.

Secunderabad Sailing Club’s legacy

Established in 1878, the Secunderabad Sailing Club is one of India’s premier and oldest sailing clubs. The club has a distinguished record, with many sailors achieving significant success, including the Arjuna Award and the Yachting Association of India Lifetime Achievement Award, both awarded to sailing legend CS Pradipak.

Commodore’s statement

Arjun Pradipak, the Commodore and Coach of the Secunderabad Sailing Club, highlighted the club’s rich history of hosting regattas for nearly a century.

“The Secunderabad Club Youth Regatta was instituted in 2021 to encourage budding and young sailors,” he said. Pradipak, a Yachting Association of India instructor, has successfully guided club members to excel in national and international sailing championships.

Achievements of club members

Several club members have represented India in international competitions:

- Alekhya Coondoo: National top-ranked sailor, represented India at the 420 World Championships in Alicante, Spain, and won medals at national regattas.

- Shloka Mahesh: Represented India at the J80 World Championship and won the J80 Offshore Gold Medal at the National Offshore Regatta.

- Maanya Reddy: Represented India in the ILCA 4 Youth Worlds in Viana, Portugal and recently won bronze at the YAI Northeast Regatta and Hyderabad Sailing Week in the ILCA 4 Girls category.

- Agastya Damisetty, Diya Patel, Kritika Vishwanathan: Participating in national-level events in the Optimist class.

Youth Regatta participation

The 2024 edition saw over 80 participants from seven states competing in various youth classes. “This year, we have top under-15, under-17, and under-19 sailors from across India vying for the annual Secunderabad Club Youth Open Rolling Trophy,” Pradipak added.

Categories and recognitions

Medals were awarded in multiple classes and categories, with special acknowledgements for the best debutant sailor and the youngest sailor.

The boats sailed included Optimist Boys and Girls (under 15), Optimist Beginners Boys and Girls (under 16), ILCA 4 Boys and Girls (under 18), International 420 Class Boats (under 19), and 29er Skiff Boats (under 19).

The event adhered to international standards by inviting international judges and a principal race officer, providing participants with valuable exposure to experienced technical officials.
