Secunderabad northeast colonies demand opening of public roads in Cantonment area

Hyderabad: Federation of North Eastern Colonies of Secunderabad (FNECS) urged the Ministry of Defence to ensure certain public roads in Secunderabad Cantonment are reopened immediately and free public access is restored to them.

In his letter to Ministry of Defence Joint Director D(Q&C) Rajesh Kumar Sah, FNECS secretary C Chandrasekhar said that the Local Military Authorities (LMA) in Secunderabad Cantonment had once again acted illegally to close citizensā€™ access to certain public roads.

In particular, the LMA arranged barricades and construction on Ammuguda Road (also referred to as Flagstaff Road), near its junction with Yapral Road (between GLR Sy Nos 173 and 172 as per 1956 GLR).

Access to Sainikpuri, ECIL

This road provides direct access between Lakdawala Junction on State Highway 1 (Rajiv Rahadari), and areas of northeastern Secunderabad such as Sainikpuri, ECIL, etc., and is a vital artery. Informing about the other road, he said the LMA has dug up the public road behind Valerian Grammar School/St Francis Xavier Church and Cemetery (GLR Survey No 130/131/132 as per 1956 GLR) in Yapral, Secunderabad.

This road is shown as a public road (marked by an arrow) in the Survey of India Map of the area below. Valerian School is marked with the legend ā€œSā€ and the number 187 next to it. The road in question is just behind it (to its north).

ā€œIt is an extension of the Municipal Corporation (GHMC) road coming from Yapral. Numerous colonies have come up in the area behind Valerian School, and the road dug up by the LMA is vital for them to commute to other parts of the city,ā€ said Chandrasekhar.

ā€œClosure of these roads is causing serious hardship to thousands of daily users. Both roads have been closed without complying with Sec 258, Cantonments Act 2006, and the Standard Operating Procedure for road closure issued by the Ministry of Defence (vide 14(9)/2018-D (Q&C) dated September 4, 2018). The closure of these roads is therefore manifestly illegal,ā€ Chandrasekhar said.
