Sehri Shopping Returns: Telangana Revives ‘Night Bazaar’ Tradition with 5 AM Extension

Hyderabad: Shops and businesses can remain open till 5 am at night for the month of Ramzan according to an order issued by the government of Telangana.

The Commissioner of Labour, M Dana Kishore, issued the directive after meeting with the labour department and transport to keep the shops open till 5 am.

Under the new orders, valid from February 19 to March 20, 2026, businesses are permitted to operate until 5:00 AM (Sehri). This ensures that citizens can safely shop and dine during the cooler nighttime hours after breaking their day-long fasts.

Why the 5 AM Extension?

The extension to 5:00 AM is specifically timed to accommodate Sehri, the pre-dawn meal consumed before the daily fast begins. Traditionally, the peak "shopping frenzy" and social activity in areas like the Old City occur between midnight and dawn. By allowing shops to stay open until 5:00 AM, the government supports the religious lifestyle of fasting citizens and provides a vital economic window for local traders.

A tradition in Telangana

The practice of extended hours is a long-standing tradition in Hyderabad and surrounding areas, aimed at facilitating the state's vibrant "Night Bazaars".

  • Historic Hubs: Areas like Charminar, Laad Bazaar, and Patther Gatti have historically functioned as 24-hour hubs during Ramzan, becoming a "shopper's paradise" for everything from bangles and attar to ethnic wear.

  • Cultural Fusion: The tradition is more than just commerce; it is a celebration of Hyderabadi culture where the aroma of Haleem, the flavor of Irani chai, and the calls of street vendors create a unique festive atmosphere that draws visitors from across the city.

  • Economic Impact: For many small hawkers and seasonal vendors, this month-long exemption is the most profitable period of the year, allowing them to capitalize on the massive crowds that throng the streets after sunset.

Strict safeguards for workers

To ensure the welfare of the workforce during these extended hours, the government has mandated the following conditions:

  • Fair Pay: Employees working overtime must receive double their ordinary wages for work exceeding 8 hours a day.

  • Rest Periods: Staff are entitled to compensatory holidays for work on off-days, and a 13-hour "spread-over" limit on total work time.

  • Women’s Safety: In a strict safety measure, women employees are prohibited from working past 8:30 PM and are exempt from extra holiday shifts.
