Signal-free soon: GHMC to build two flyovers on Mehdipatnam–IT corridor
Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has announced a Rs 398-crore project under the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure (H-CITI) initiative to address chronic traffic snarls in the western part of the city.
The plan includes multi-level flyovers and grade separators at the busy Nanalnagar–Rethibowli junction, aimed at creating a signal-free corridor towards the IT hub.
Project cost and timeline
Of the total estimated cost of Rs 398 crore, around Rs 220 crore has been earmarked for construction. The balance will be spent on land acquisition, shifting utilities such as pipelines and power cables, consultancy fees, and installing noise barriers.
The project will be executed on an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model, with a completion deadline of two years. Contractors will also be responsible for addressing any defects during an additional two-year liability period.
Key components of the Project
Mehdipatnam–Tolichowki Flyover: A three-lane first-level flyover, 12.5 metres wide.
Langar Houz–Mehdipatnam Flyover: A two-lane flyover, 9 metres wide, across Nanalnagar junction.
Attapur–Mehdipatnam Flyover: A two-lane flyover, 9 metres wide, via Rethibowli junction.
Integrated Corridor: The latter two flyovers will merge at Rethibowli and continue as a three-lane elevated road towards Mehdipatnam.
Benefits for commuters
Once completed, the project is expected to significantly decongest the Mehdipatnam, Tolichowki, Langar Houz, Attapur, and Gachibowli routes.
Officials noted that the signal-free corridor will particularly benefit thousands of IT professionals travelling daily to the Financial District and Gachibowli, cutting travel time considerably.
GHMC commissioner calls for fast-tracking projects
GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan has directed officials to accelerate works under H-CITI and the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP) to ease traffic congestion across Hyderabad. Stressing that these are priority projects of the State government, he urged officials to ensure timely completion.
Review meeting with officials
At a review meeting held here, engineering officials presented updates on ongoing works through a PowerPoint presentation, highlighting bottlenecks such as pending land acquisition and utility shifting.
Karnan assured that funds were not a constraint and directed the teams to resolve hurdles on a war footing. He also asked them to work in close coordination with the traffic police to minimize inconvenience to commuters.
In-house design wing set up
To speed up design approvals and reduce dependence on private consultants, GHMC has set up an in-house Infrastructure Design Wing. The unit comprises ten engineers, alumni of IITs and NITs, who will work under the guidance of senior officials to finalize project designs swiftly.
