Hyderabad: Waking up to growing road accidents, GHMC, Cyberabad Police to develop skywalks, service roads, footpaths
Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and Cyberabad Police have decided to develop proper footpaths, skywalks, dedicated service roads, separate two-wheeler lanes, and protected pedestrian crossings across key junctions in a bid to prevent accidents at busy junctions.
The decision was taken at a high-level coordination meeting held at the Cyberabad Police Commissioner’s Office here on Thursday.
The meeting was jointly chaired by Cyberabad Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dr. Gajarao Bhupal and GHMC Serilingampally Zonal Commissioner Bhorkhade Hemant Sahadeorao, along with senior engineering and civic officials.
IT corridor, IIIT junction traffic under focus
With the IT corridor witnessing heavy vehicular movement, officials reviewed anticipated traffic disruptions due to upcoming KNR infrastructure works at the IIIT Junction.
Alternative traffic routes were identified to ensure smooth flow during the construction period. It was also decided to conduct joint field inspections to identify chronic traffic bottlenecks and implement location-specific traffic management plans.
Flyovers, underpasses, and Road expansion
Construction of new flyovers, underpasses, and foot-over bridges at critical junctions was placed on priority to ease congestion and improve pedestrian movement.
Officials were directed to complete all pending road works at the earliest. Plans were also drawn up for road widening, removal of unnecessary dividers, and creation of free left-turn lanes at key intersections.
Boost to Pedestrian and Two-Wheeler safety
To reduce accidents and improve safety, the meeting stressed the development of proper footpaths, skywalks, dedicated service roads, segregated two-wheeler pathways, and protected pedestrian crossings. Installation of high-mast lighting and proper lane markings was also proposed to improve visibility and enforce lane discipline.
Drainage, waterlogging, and encroachments
Pending drainage works and road repairs were reviewed, and officials were asked to complete them on priority to prevent waterlogging and traffic snarls. Regular cleaning and maintenance of drainage systems was also made mandatory.
The issue of illegal encroachments choking roads and footpaths came up for discussion, with a firm decision to remove them to ensure smoother traffic flow.
Bus shelters, traffic signals to be streamlined
To ease congestion at key junctions, authorities decided to relocate bus shelters and bus bays from traffic-prone locations to more suitable areas. Traffic signal management will also be strengthened by shifting non-functional signals and installing new ones wherever needed.
The meeting was attended by Madhapur Traffic DCP Sai Manohar, Medchal Traffic DCP Ranjan Ratan Kumar, ADCPs G. Hanmantha Rao and Veeranna, ACPs K. Chandrashekar Reddy, Venkat Reddy, and Giri Prasad, along with Traffic Inspectors and GHMC officials from Serilingampally, Charminar, and West Zones.
