Hyderabad: Two months after a 10-year-old boy slipped from the sixth floor of an apartment building, a team of doctors at SLG Hospitals in Hyderabad helped him recover successfully.

On June 1, Lohith was admitted in critical condition at SLG Hospitals. When the boy was taken to the hospital, he was unconscious, bleeding from the head and face, his blood pressure was below recordable values, his right leg and left hand had several fractures, his jaw bone had shattered, his brain had clots on both sides, and his haemoglobin was only 6 gm, which is considered serious.

According to Dr Ranganadham, senior neurosurgeon and HOD of Neuro Surgery, SLG Hospitals, “Considering the fact that the brain was not responding initially, we started with blood transfusion and continued for about five days. With the condition not showing improvement, we did emergency surgery on the evening of day five to remove fractured bone fragments from the right brain. The dura mater, the outer, thick, strong membrane layer directly beneath the skull and vertebral column was surgically opened in order to relieve brain pressure and drain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), a clear, colourless, watery fluid; external ventricular drainage (EVD) was also performed. This procedure relieved pressure in the brain and helped the child’s condition improve slowly.”

“The kid opened his eyes five days after the procedure. Following the brain operation, orthopaedic procedures were conducted on his thigh and hand to heal the fractures. Because the patient had been unable to breathe properly since the accident, a tracheostomy was done to give oxygen to the lungs. The shattered jaw and other features of the face were treated by facio-maxillary surgery. The kid was eventually able to move after approximately three weeks,” he said.

Dr G Ravi Kiran, consultant neurosurgeon, Dr Kodali Sandhya, consultant neurosurgeon, Dr Narasimha Reddy, consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Amar Raghu, consultant plastic and reconstructive surgery, anaesthesia team Dr Laxma Reddy, Dr Rajkumar and team, and emergency medicine Dr Appi Reddy and team contributed to the boy’s recovery from a near fatal condition.

Though initially shaken up by the incident, the parents are now happy that their son is recovering. G Rajesh, the boy’s father, said, “We thank SLG Hospitals, particularly Dr Ranganadham, for everything they have done for us over the last month. We still recall how my son Lohith was brought to the emergency room after the terrible accident. Our initial consultation with Dr Ranganadham, and the manner he explained the child’s injuries and condition at the time, gave us hope. The course of action that SLG physicians took for our child aided in his rehabilitation.”

The youngster was discharged from the hospital on July 1 and will be monitored remotely for the following five weeks to ensure his full recovery.
