Steroid abuse in Hyderabad gyms: DCA raids 20 gyms for illegally selling prescription-only drugs

Hyderabad: The Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Telangana, conducted surprise raids on Friday against 20 gyms across Hyderabad in coordination with local police.
The raids were part of a special drive against the illegal sale of anabolic-androgenic steroids and prescription cardiac stimulants being supplied to gym-goers for bodybuilding abuse.
Gyms stocking prescription-only drugs illegally
The inspections were carried out in gyms located in Secunderabad, Mehdipatnam, Tolichowki, Malakpet, Punjagutta, Narsingi, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Kothapet, Kukatpally and Suraram.
DCA officials said the focus was to identify gyms stocking prescription-only drugs without authorisation and selling them directly to fitness enthusiasts.
Drug misuse can trigger heart and liver issues
According to the DCA, misuse of anabolic-androgenic steroids, commonly promoted for muscle growth, can trigger serious medical conditions, including:
• Cardiovascular complications
• Liver damage
• Hormonal disturbances
• Severe mood disorders
Long-term dependency could result in infertility, kidney failure and psychiatric illness.
The administration also pointed to misuse of Mephentermine Sulphate Injection, a cardiac stimulant meant strictly for the treatment of low blood pressure during spinal anaesthesia.
“Only a doctor should determine the appropriate dose and duration of this medicine for each individual,” the statement cautioned.
Officials observed that some gyms have been selling this injection to enhance physical endurance among bodybuilders, a practice they say is dangerous.
Strict legal action warned
The DCA stated, “Any gym found illegally stocking or selling prescription medicines will face strict legal action under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.”
The note further warned that the illegal sale of such medicines can lead to imprisonment of up to five years for those involved.
Public urged to report violations
Authorities appealed to citizens to report illegal drug activities, including abuse of performance-enhancing substances, through the DCA’s toll-free number 1800-599-6969, functional on working days between 10:30 am and 5 pm.
Shahnawaz Qasim, IPS, Director General, Drugs Control Administration, said the department will continue enforcement efforts to curb the misuse of prescription drugs in gyms.
