Sudden thunderstorms, heavy rains sweep Vikarabad, Secunderabad; mercury drops

Hyderabad: Telangana experienced a sudden drop in temperature and heavy rainfall across various districts on Wednesday and Thursday. The unexpected weather changes have affected several regions, causing inconvenience to residents.

In the Vikarabad district, Dharur Mandal’s Nagaram area received significant rainfall. The sudden weather shift brought cold conditions and heavy showers.

The Jedimetla range also experienced sudden rainfall and a drop in temperature. Areas including Kutbullapur, Chintal, Shahpur Nagar, Ghazularamaram, Suraram, Bachupally, and Nizampet faced strong winds and thundershowers.

In Secunderabad, heavy rains were reported at Gandhi Hospital, Railway Station, Mettuguda, Sitaphalmandi and Chilakalaguda areas.

Hyderabad city saw significant rainfall in Basheerbagh, Koti, Abids and Begum Bazar areas. Residents in Somajiguda, Panjagutta, Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills also reported heavy rains.

In the Medchal district, many parts experienced heavy rainfall. Nampally, Abids, Goshamahal and Afzal Ganj were particularly affected.

Low pressure behind sudden rains

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the unusual weather pattern is due to a combination of factors.

Balaji, a Telangana weatherman, said, “The current weather conditions are influenced by a low-pressure area over the region, coupled with moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal. These factors have contributed to the sudden heavy rainfall and drop in temperatures.”

“Such abrupt weather changes are not typical for this time of the year. The heavy rains and strong winds are expected to continue for the next couple of days. We advise residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel,” Balaji added.

‘Power supply remains normal’

In response to the severe weather, Musharraf Farooqui, chairman and managing director of Southern Power Transmission Company, IAS, reviewed the power supply situation in Hyderabad and other districts. “At present, the supply is at a normal level,” he said.

Farooqui cautioned the general public and electricity consumers to be alert due to the heavy winds, which could cause tree branches, remnants of flexi, construction materials and other objects to fall on power lines.

Safety precautions during thundershowers

- Avoid standing under stray wires, power lines and transformers during rains. Keep livestock and pets away from electrical equipment.

- Do not step on or drive over electric wires lying on the road or in water. Report any fallen wires to the nearest electrical staff or contact the company immediately.

- Report any cut wires on tree branches, vehicles or buildings to the company without delay.

- In case of power supply fluctuations during heavy winds and rains, switch off electrical equipment and inform the control room immediately.

- When contacting the control room to report power outages, have the USC number printed on the bill ready.

- Inform the authorities immediately in low-lying areas and apartment cellars if there is an issue.

For emergencies related to electricity, complaints can be made by calling 1912, 100 or the local electricity office and the special control room of the concerned circle.
