Swiggy delivery agent dies after tractor rams into his bike in Gachibowli

Hyderabad: Adil Ahmed (24), a Swiggy delivery executive, was on his way to deliver food when a speeding tractor hit him in Gachibowli on 28 July. He was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Adil is survived by his wife and two-month-old child.

According to the Gachibowli police, Adil was riding on his motorcycle from IIIT to Wipro circle when the incident occurred. The police said according to eyewitnesses, a tractor coming from the opposite direction rammed into his bike. The incident took place at around noon.

The tractor was seized and efforts are being made to apprehend the driver, the police said.

Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) founder and president Shaik Salauddin demanded a compensation from Swiggy in accordance with the Workmen's Compensation Act 1923.

"The Workmen's Compensation Act stipulates that the compensation should be 40% of the wage multiplied by the relevant age factor," Mr. Saluddin said. Adil was earning Rs. 25,000 per month.

According to the Act, if an employee dies in service a lump sum amount needs to be paid to the family members. The lump sum amount is 40% of the employee's salary multiplied by a relevant factor (as per his age). The relevant factor here is 218.47 as Adil was 24 years old. Hence, as per the Act, a compensation of Rs. 21,84,700 needs to be paid to the victim's family.

A Swiggy spokesperson said compensation will be paid to Adil's family but did not confirm the amount.

It should be noted that Swiggy does not provide health insurance cards. However, all Swiggy delivery persons pay a small monthly fee for third-party health insurance. Swiggy claims to provide third party medical and accident insurance. According to the information on their website, all delivery partners and their families are insured for up to Rs. 6 lakhs.
