Hyderabad: Hyderabad District Consumer Commission–III has penalised Tata Motors and two authorised dealers for selling a faulty electric vehicle to the buyer.

The vehicle repeatedly developed technical snags, causing prolonged inconvenience to the buyer.

Commission awards ₹1 Lakh for Mental Agony

The Commission directed Tata Motors, Orange Auto Pvt. Ltd., and Venkataramana Motors to jointly pay Rs 1 lakh as compensation to complainant Y. Srinivasa Rao, along with Rs 10,000 towards legal expenses.

Nexon EV showed persistent battery and motor issues

Srinivasa Rao purchased a Tata Nexon EV on May 15, 2021, for Rs 15.40 lakh after being influenced by advertisements. Soon after, the vehicle began developing repeated defects in the HP battery pack, traction motor, and transmission, severely affecting usability.

Eight service visits, 69 days in Workshop

Records submitted to the Commission showed that from April 2023 to December 2024, the vehicle had to be taken to the service centre eight times. Cumulatively, it remained in the workshop for 69 days, forcing the owner to repeatedly depend on repairs.

Commission holds manufacturer, dealers liable

Citing continuous defects and inconvenience, the Commission ruled that the manufacturer and dealers failed to deliver a defect-free product, upholding the consumer’s complaint and directing compensation.
