Hyderabad: In a first-of-its-kind operation, Telangana CID conducted raids across Rajasthan, Gujarat and Punjab, arresting eight individuals allegedly running illegal online betting platforms, officials said.
Telangana police strike beyond State borders
This marks the first time Telangana Police have conducted raids outside the state as part of an illegal betting investigation.
The State has also been booking cases against celebrities promoting such platforms.
Raids conducted over two days
The raids were carried out on Monday and Tuesday by six CID teams, targeting operators running betting activities through apps Taj0077, Fairply.live, Andhra365, Vlbook, Telugu365, and Yes365.
Evidence seized, data under examination
Investigators seized multiple hardware devices containing large volumes of data linked to the betting networks. The evidence is now being examined to trace the flow of money and digital footprints, officials said.
Focus on larger syndicate
A senior officer noted that the probe is aimed at uncovering the larger syndicate behind the apps. Preliminary findings indicate that the main organisers may be operating from abroad, while local handlers manage operations within India.
Celebrities under ED scanner
In July, the Enforcement Directorate booked 29 actors, influencers, and YouTubers across Telugu states for allegedly endorsing illegal betting apps, violating the Public Gambling Act, 1867.
ED questioned film stars including Vijay Deverakonda, Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj and Manchu Lakshmi.
Earlier, Hyderabad and Cyberabad Police had filed FIRs against most of them.
Government moves to strengthen laws
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced in March that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) would be set up to curb online betting. He criticised the previous BRS government for failing to enforce the 2017 law banning online gambling.
Tougher punishments planned
CM Revanth also highlighted that existing laws carry a maximum two-year sentence and said legislation may be amended to impose harsher penalties on organisers and participants, aiming to deter future crimes.
