Hyderabad: Telangana government has launched a multi-departmental action plan to ease chronic traffic congestion in Madhapur and Hitec City.
The busiest areas of Hyderabad witness a daily footfall of over 1.3 lakh.
Simultaneously, concrete measures have been initiated to prevent sewage inflow into Durgam Cheruvu and preserve its ecological balance.
The joint inspection was conducted on the directions of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, with officials from five key departments reviewing ongoing and proposed works in the Hitec City corridor.
Joint inspection by senior officials
A team comprising Cyberabad Municipal Commissioner Srijana, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) Managing Director Ashok Reddy, Traffic DCP and ACP officials, Municipal Zonal Commissioner Hemanth, and representatives from Irrigation, Electricity, Police, and TGIIC departments conducted an extensive field visit.
The inspection covered the stretch from Lemon Tree Hotel to Shilparamam, including the road expansion corridor between Trident Hotel and the surrounding junctions.
Officials reviewed road widening works and discussed shifting air valves and electric poles to facilitate seamless expansion. They also examined the proposed road development from Hitec City to Medicover Hospital. Once completed, these works are expected to significantly reduce congestion in Madhapur, Mindspace, and Hitec City IT corridors.
Major road expansion to ease traffic
Authorities assessed the one-kilometre road stretch identified for widening to improve vehicular movement. With multiple IT companies and commercial establishments operating in the region, the initiative aims to decongest peak-hour bottlenecks.
Officials directed departments to expedite utility shifting and complete works at the earliest to provide relief to commuters and residents.
Sewage diversion to protect Durgam Cheruvu
In parallel, the government has stepped up measures to protect Durgam Cheruvu from pollution.
A joint inspection involving HMWSSB, Municipal Administration, HMDA, Lakes, Revenue, and Irrigation departments was conducted to prevent untreated sewage from entering the lake.
Currently, sewage generated from Madhapur, Silent Valley, and surrounding catchment areas is being treated at two Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) of 5 MLD and 7 MLD capacity constructed near the lake. Treated water is being released into the lake to maintain groundwater levels and preserve its hydrology.
1000 mm pipeline nearing completion
To prevent excess sewage inflow from other areas, a 1000 mm diameter pipeline is under construction from Madhapur Petrol Pump to the I&D (Interception & Diversion) point. Once completed, it will curb sewage overflow into the lake park and further reduce contamination.
Additionally, stormwater drains are being strengthened to prevent floodwater from entering the lake during the monsoon.
Mandatory use of recycled water in Mindspace
The HMWSSB MD directed that only treated water from the Durgam Cheruvu STP must be used for construction, landscaping, gardening, and maintenance activities in the Raheja Mindspace area.
A dedicated pipeline is proposed to transport treated water from the STP to commercial establishments, ensuring 100% use of recycled water for non-potable purposes.
The coordinated efforts mark a dual push by the state government, easing urban traffic congestion while safeguarding vital water bodies in Hyderabad’s rapidly expanding IT hub.
