Telangana: DCA launches drive against overpricing, unlicensed sale of medicines

Hyderabad: Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) has launched a drive against overpricing and unlicensed sale of medicines in the state.

Overpriced Itraven-200 Seized in Madhira, Khammam:

On 13th February 2024, officials from the Drugs Control Administration seized Itraven-200 (Itraconazole Capsules 200 mg) at Madhira, Khammam. The product, manufactured by Sunlife Sciences and marketed by Ventiz Healthcare, was found to have an MRP of Rs. 390 for 10 capsules, exceeding the Ceiling Price set by the Central Government.

According to the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013, the Ceiling Price for Itraconazole Capsules 200 mg is Rs. 22.12 for one capsule. The firm violated this regulation by charging Rs. 39 for one capsule, resulting in an excess of Rs. 14.22 (54.4% excess). The stock seized during the raid is valued at Rs. 5,460.

G. Prasad, Assistant Director, Khammam, and K. Devender Reddy, Drugs Inspector, Khammam Rural, conducted the raid. Director General V.B. Kamalasan Reddy emphasized that stringent action would be taken against offenders to ensure compliance with the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013.

Raid on Clinics Run by Quacks at Dundigal Village:

On the same day, the Drugs Control Administration raided clinics run by quacks, T. Ravindra and V. Vasudev, at Dundigal Village, Gandimaisamma Mandal. Both individuals were claiming to be 'Rural Medical Practitioners' and practicing medicine without the necessary qualifications.

During the raids, officials discovered large stocks of medicines, including antibiotics, analgesics, anti-ulcer drugs, and anti-hypertensives, valued at Rs. 75,000. The clinics were found to be operating without a valid drug license, posing serious risks to public health.

G. Sreenivas, Assistant Director, Medchal, and various drug inspectors conducted the raids. The officials lifted samples for analysis, and further investigations will be carried out to take legal action against the offenders.

Director General V.B. Kamalasan Reddy highlighted the responsibility of wholesalers and dealers, emphasizing that supplying medicines to unqualified individuals without a valid drug license is punishable under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
