Telangana: Dry and warm days ahead in March
Hyderabad: After a brief spell of cold breeze last week, Telangana is set to experience dry weather in the coming days, with temperatures soaring to a minimum of 37°C during the daytime and dipping to around 20°C at night. The shift in weather marks the onset of summer, bringing with it rising heat levels across the state.
Temperature rise across the State
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted a steady increase in temperatures, with Hyderabad and other districts expected to witness hotter days ahead. The dry spell is likely to persist, with no immediate signs of rainfall.
Speaking about the weather transition, meteorologist KS Sridhar told Newsmeter that ‘the cold breeze Telangana experienced last week was due to northerly winds, but with the change in wind patterns, temperatures are now climbing.’
“This is a clear indication that summer has begun,” he said.
Advisory for protection against heatwave
As IMD Hyderabad has forecasted a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2-3°C over the next three days, the Directorate of Public Health and Family Welfare has issued an advisory for citizens to protect themselves from the increasing heat.
Do’s
• Stay Hydrated: Drink sufficient water even if you are not thirsty. Use Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) and consume homemade drinks like lemon water, buttermilk or salt-sugar solutions.
• Carry water while traveling.
• Eat seasonal fruits and vegetables with high water content like watermelon, muskmelon, oranges, grapes, pineapples, cucumber, and lettuce.
• Stay Covered: Wear thin, loose, light-coloured cotton garments. Cover your head with an umbrella, hat, cap, towel, or traditional headgear when exposed to direct sunlight. Wear shoes or slippers while stepping out.
• Stay Indoors as Much as Possible: Remain in well-ventilated and cool spaces. Keep windows and curtains closed during the day, especially on the sunny side of your house, and open them at night to allow cool air in. Limit outdoor activities to early mornings and evenings.
• Stay Alert: Follow local weather news via radio, TV, newspapers or the IMD website.
Don’ts
• Avoid going out in the sun, especially between 12 pm and 3 pm.
• Refrain from strenuous activities during peak afternoon hours.
• Do not go out barefoot.
• Avoid cooking during peak hours without proper ventilation.
• Limit alcohol, tea, coffee, carbonated drinks and sugary beverages, as they can lead to dehydration.
• Avoid high-protein, salty, spicy and oily food. Do not consume stale food.
Signs of heatwave danger
Seek immediate medical attention if you or anyone around you exhibits the following symptoms:
• Confusion, agitation, irritability, seizures, or unconsciousness.
• Hot, red, and dry skin.
• Body temperature of ≥40°C (104°F).
• Throbbing headache, dizziness, fainting or nausea.
• Rapid heartbeat and shallow breathing.
• Muscle weakness or cramps.
Government measures
To address heat-related emergencies, the Telangana government has made arrangements in public health facilities, including special beds, IV fluids, essential medicines, and ORS sachets. These are also available with ASHA workers and Anganwadi staff to provide relief to those affected.
What to expect in the coming weeks
IMD officials warn that temperatures could rise further as the season progresses, with some districts likely to touch 40°C soon. While nights may offer some relief, the trend indicates an early and intense summer.
With Telangana officially stepping into the summer season, residents are advised to follow heat safety guidelines and take necessary precautions to stay cool and protected.
