Telangana floods: 47 dead, 813 cattle perish; HC seeks disaster management compliance report

Telangana government on Monday informed the High Court that 47 people lost their lives in the recent floods.

Special GP Harender Pershad informed the division bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice T Vinod Kumar that 47 people lost their lives in floods. He said four people died in separate incidents in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district.

Moreover, 813 cattle also died in the floods. For the flood victims, 192 relief camps were established and 15,387 people were provided shelter by the government. He said all the victims have returned to their respective homes

The court was hearing the PIL of Dr. Cheruku Sudhakar alleging the inaction of the state government in implementing Minimum Standard Relief including water, food, shelter medical cover, sanitation, ex-gratia to the affected people.

The petitioner sought direction to state to provide compensation to the affected farmers and residents of Mulugu district, Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, Peddapalli district, Asifabad Komaram Bheem district, Adilabad district, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Warangal Urban and Warangal rural districts, Mahaboobnagar district, NagarKurnool and Hyderabad district.

The court said the government had not stated anything about the imminent danger to people in low-lying areas under the Kaddem dam project, which was overflowing with flood water. The court instructed the government to file a separate report on the relief measures for the flood-affected families.

The court directed the government that necessary steps should be taken for the implementation of Section 39 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

The court also asked the government to take steps to trace out Gaddam Mahalaxmi who has been missing since the floods and pay compensation to her legal heir.

The court also asked to place a compliance report of the Sec 39 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005 before it on December 18, 2023.
