Hyderabad: The Telangana State government on Sunday announced a comprehensive support package for the family of Excise Constable Gajula Sowmya, who laid down her life while performing duty.
Sowmya suffered grievous injuries while attempting to stop ganja smugglers in Nizamabad district and succumbed during treatment at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) on Saturday night.
The welfare package includes Rs 1 crore ex-gratia, a government job for the brother of Gajula Sowmya and salary payment till her notional retirement age.
Prohibition and Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao made the announcement after paying floral tributes to Sowmya’s mortal remains at Gandhi Hospital, Secunderabad, and meeting her family members.
Relief measures for financial security
The Minister said the loss suffered by Sowmya’s family was irreparable and assured them that the government would stand by them in every possible way.
He said the relief measures were aimed at ensuring long-term financial security for the bereaved family.
Sowmya’s bravery is an inspiration
The Minister described Sowmya’s courage, dedication and sense of duty as inspirational, stating that her sacrifice would always be remembered. He said no compensation could truly fill the void left by her loss, but the government would ensure that her family faced no hardship.
Excise Staff donate one day's salary
Jupally Krishna Rao appreciated the decision of Excise department officials and staff to donate one day’s salary to support Sowmya’s family, calling it a touching example of solidarity and compassion within the department.
Stern warning to criminal gangs
Asserting that the safety of Excise personnel is the government’s responsibility, the Minister warned that criminals targeting Excise officials would face the strictest action. He said the government would not tolerate attacks on officers enforcing the law.
Proposal to arm excise officials under review
The Minister disclosed that the proposal to provide weapons to Excise officials is under active consideration, and a decision will be taken soon to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
He added that the government would act more firmly against ganja and narcotics syndicates.
Excise officials and staff observed a two-minute silence in memory of Sowmya. Additional Excise Commissioner Qureshi, representatives of the Excise Officers’ Association, and other officials were present during the tribute.
