Telangana govt clears Rs 225-crore plan for Hyderabad’s first artificial beach at Kotwal Guda
Hyderabad: Hyderabad may be far from India’s coast, but by the end of the decade, it could be home to its own stretch of sand and surf.
The Telangana government has cleared a Rs 225-crore project to build the city’s first artificial beach at Kotwal Guda in Ranga Reddy district, spread across 35 acres, with work scheduled to start in December under a public–private partnership model.
A beach without the sea
The centrepiece of the development will be a man-made lake equipped with wave-making technology to replicate a shoreline.
Around it, the plan includes sand zones, water adventure rides, floating villas, hotels, cycling tracks and landscaped parks. Officials say the project is designed as a full-fledged leisure destination rather than a single attraction.
Food courts, entertainment zones, decorative fountains and a theatre space are also part of the blueprint. The aim, according to tourism authorities, is to provide Hyderabadis with a weekend retreat that combines recreation, adventure and family-friendly amenities within city limits.
Why Kotwal Guda?
Kotwal Guda was identified for its accessibility from the Outer Ring Road, making it convenient for residents across the city as well as visitors from neighbouring districts. Authorities emphasise that the project will follow environmental checks, particularly around water use and traffic management.
Telangana’s untapped tourism potential at Rs 15,000 crore
Patel Ramesh Reddy, Chairman of the Telangana State Tourism Development Corporation (TSTDC), confirmed that the detailed project report has been finalised.
“International firms have already shown interest in investing beyond the initial Rs 225 crore,” he said.
Reddy added that Telangana’s untapped tourism potential is valued at more than Rs 15,000 crore, covering heritage, eco-tourism, and leisure. “The artificial beach will be one of our flagship projects, and we see it as a step towards putting Hyderabad on the global tourism map,” he noted.
Prominent additions such as IT sector
For many city residents, the nearest option for a seaside experience has been Suryalanka Beach in Andhra Pradesh, a several-hour drive away. The new project promises a closer alternative, with a mix of adventure sports, staycation facilities, and public recreation areas.
Tourism planners believe the beach will add a new dimension to Hyderabad’s identity, alongside its heritage monuments and IT corridor, while keeping weekend spending within the city.
