Telangana govt to develop Khammam Fort as tourist destination

Hyderabad: Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao has emphasized the need for comprehensive development of Khammam Fort, specifically focusing on enhancing its appeal as a tourist destination.

The minister directed officials to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) and engage expert consultants for the initiative.

During the meeting, Minister Rao outlined various essential facilities to be incorporated, including a ropeway, drinking water provisions, toilets, parking spaces, a food court, stair railings, lighting, gazebos, seating benches, and adequate power supply.

ā€œThe objective is to create an environment conducive to attracting tourists and providing them with essential amenities,ā€ said Minister Rao.

Highlighting the historical significance of the fort, Minister Rao referred to the earlier efforts under the BRS regime, which aimed to revitalize the historic structure built by the Kakatiya rulers in 950 AD. As part of this initiative, the Khammam Municipal Corporation successfully restored the Zafar well for Rs 61.80 lakh.

The Zafar well, utilized for rainwater harvesting, has been an integral part of the fort's southern side since the Kakatiya era. The restoration project, initiated under the guidance of district Collector VP Gautham and municipal Commissioner Adarsh Surabhi, enlisted the Rainwater Project of Hyderabad. Commencing in April 2023, the restoration involved the operation of two 7HP motors for 23 days to pump out water and the engagement of 24 workers for 90 days to remove approximately 2.12 lakh cubic meters of silt and garbage from the well.

Measuring 60 feet in length, 70 feet in depth, and 60 feet in width, the Zafar well underwent an extensive restoration process and was officially inaugurated on February 17.

The minister's directive to focus on enhancing infrastructure aligns with a broader vision to transform Khammam Fort into a welcoming tourist spot, showcasing its rich historical legacy.

ā€œAs efforts continue, the ongoing development projects are set to breathe new life into this ancient monument, inviting visitors to explore and appreciate its cultural and historical significanceā€ concluded the Minister.
